I feel like most people seem to think the story of the Trojan Horse is about how dumb the Trojans were to accept the horse, but in the traditional story, the Trojans are initially like "hell no that's obviously a trap".
There were a bunch of layers to the deception, but the main thing that got the Trojans to take the horse into the city was that the Trojan priest Laocoön, who was the most gung-ho about destroying the horse, all of a sudden gets strangled to death by big snakes that came out of the ocean. The Trojans take that as a sign from the gods that they shouldn't listen to that guy.
And apparently the snakes were sent by the gods, though different versions disagree about which god. In one version, Apollo sent the snakes to punish Laocoön for boning his wife in front of a statue of Apollo.
